Summer Weekly Themes
Monarch Christian Academy will have a FUN Academic Summer Program. Children will be introduced to new science themes each week using hands on materials. A fun activity relating to the weekly theme will be held each week. Students may sign up for the whole summer or for as little as two weeks.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The kindergarten and first grade academic program will focus on Phonics, Reading, Comprehension, and Writing and Math skills. The second through fifth grade academic program will focus on Literature, Creative writing, Vocabulary, Spelling and Math skills.
DRESS CODE: Students will have free dress for the summer session. Students may wear t-shirts and shorts, dresses or pants. All clothes must be modest in keeping with the school’s dress code. Elementary students will need to wear a Monarch t-shirt on the off campus field trips. Students must wear closed toe shoes at all times. Sandals and slippers are not allowed for the safety of the students.
DINOSAURS
Brontosaurus, Stegosaurus, Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops! We will learn about this fascinating group of reptiles that once ruled the earth. The children will study their shapes, sizes and habitat. Our junior paleontologists will participate in a mini dinosaur dig! Learn the differences between meat eating and plant eating animals and look at some dinosaur teeth up close.
SPACE
Students will learn all about the moon, planets and asteroids. They will also learn about aerodynamics and the way objects move through air. How an airplane is able to fly, a rocket blast off or a kite fly in the air!
SEA CREATURES
Whales, dolphins, sharks and starfish are just a few of the sea creatures the children will learn about. Students will identify parts of a fish, classifying vertebrate and invertebrate.
HUMAN BODY
The human body is a fascinating subject. Whether it’s our eyes or our tummy, everything in our body has something interesting to talk about. Students will engage in activities relating to the body.
BUGS & INSECTS
Insects are everywhere! Insects are believed to outnumber any other type of animal on earth! The children will explore and learn about the fantastic lives of beetles, butterflies, caterpillars and ants.
MAMMALS
Students will learn that mammals grow and change. They will identify the characteristics of mammals and discover how mammals move, eat and their habitat.
ROCKS/MINERALS/MAGNETS
Students will learn about the three main types of rock, find out how to tell the different rock types apart, and see how rocks change from one type into another. They will also experience the poles and power of magnets.
WEATHER & WATER
The students will learn all the different kinds of weather conditions they might encounter when they go outside! From sunny days with cool breezes to violent rainstorms and frigid blizzards are some of the weather conditions the students will learn about.
RAIN FOREST
Students will learn about seed germination and discover that a baby plant exists in every seed. They will also experiment with the effect light has on seed germination, and predict if seeds germinate best in the light or the dark.
HAWAII
Students will learn fun facts about the Hawaiian culture, foods, festival and rainforests. We will end the week with a Hawaiian Luau!
MEXICO
Students will learn fun facts about the Mexican culture, foods, festivals and language. We will end the week with a Mexican fiesta!
PARIS
Students will learn about the famous monuments of Paris. They will explore the rich art and culture of the land. Students will also learn table manners and have an opportunity to demonstrate the etiquette they have learned at our very own French Café at Monarch!
SPORTS
Students have fun participating and learning about various sports. Races, basketball, soccer and obstacle courses are a few of the skills the students will learn.
REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS
Students will have hands-on experience with a variety of creatures- a Bearded Dragon, large tortoise, Tree Frogs, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Crested geckos, Tarantula, Iguana, and a few snakes! They will learn about the characteristics, habitat and behavior of reptiles & amphibians.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
READING CLUB: The students will participate in a reading club. Weekly books will be assigned for each group. Students may borrow the weekly assigned books from their local library.
COOKING: The students will have a fun hands-on cooking experience. They will learn to read a recipe, follow instructions and eat what they make. Students will measure liquid and dry ingredients. They will handle kitchen utensils such as hand beaters, sieves, graters, scales, etc. They will work as a team, learn to set a table and of course tidy up their own mess!
WHEELS DAY: Students may bring their bikes or scooters to ride at school! Please remember to bring a helmet and knee and elbow pads for safety reasons.
SPEECH: The students will learn basic communication and public speaking skills. Each week they will have an opportunity to speak in front of their peers
OFF CAMPUS FIELD TRIPS: The elementary student will participate in off campus field trips. We may need parent volunteers to drive or chaperone on these field trips. Students will need to wear a Monarch t-shirt and comfortable walking shoes on the off campus field trips.
